Readers of The Budget Ecoist know that we are fans of the swap...be it books, video games, or magazines. Swapping just makes sense, both from an environmental and financial perspective. Heck, Native Americans got by just fine before currency and credit cards paved the way to our, um, new, more civilized (ahem, clearing throat, excuse us) way of exchange. Swapping allows you and the market to set a fair price for that coveted piece of clothing, together.
So we were excited to learn about whatsmineisyours.com, the UK's finest eco-friendly swap-shop, helping savvy fashionistas everywhere to swap, buy and sell clothes on-line since 2004.
With over 13,000 members already, whatsmineisyours.com is free to join and swap, allowing for the possibility of swapping clothes at no cost! And even better news: if you're the type of person who can only put an outfit together based on what the mannequin is wearing, registered users of whatsmineisyours.com will have access to the free ‘ASK JUDY’ section where personal shoppers and fashion stylists give helpful advice and style tips to anyone who needs some style counseling. Users can also take advantage of the unique ‘WISH LIST’ allowing them to post the items they wish they had so other members can offer them a decent swap.

‘You know that designer clobber at the back of your closet you never wear (play along please) but can’t bear to give to your local charity shop because it cost a month’s wages – well this site is for you. It’s the UK’s first interactive swap and sale site for designer goods. It works rather like eBay with a member’s rating facility for successful swaps. Click on the Learn to Swap section which guides you through registration, security issues and how to work the site. The site is now open to members from around the world, free to join.,
Swapping is not the inspirational activity it could be. Appropriated by reality TV via Wife Swap/life swap/holiday swap formats, it has a whiff of trauma about it. And due to the car-keys-in-bowl pastime of actual wife swapping, it lacks certain innocence. But cast your mind back to when Swap Shop was the highlight of Saturday-morning TV, and you can see its potential.
In case you missed it, Swap Shop, presented by Noel Edmonds - which I admit may not sound so alluring these days - enthralled the nation in the early Eighties courtesy of its core swaperama concept. In the heat of the Swap Shop moment, I don't remember anybody stopping to consider the ethical benefits of this scheme, but with hindsight, it was the perfect way for thousands of kids to acquire new toys, while extending the lives of their old ones.
And luckily there are hints of a fledgling Swaperama-style renaissance, but this time centred in the unlikely world of high-end fashion. www.whatsmineisyours.com is set to become the refuge for fashionistas who have bought something so fabulously distinctive that they can only wear it once. Rather than leaving said piece to languish in a wardrobe, it can be use as swapping currency to be exchanged on the site.
Inevitably, you'll be bartering for other people's fashion mistakes, but you can be sure they're highcalibre, directional ones. What's Mine Is Yours is an oasis of fashion luminaries, featuring labels such as Robert Cary-Williams. There are accessories, too. So if you've got a Miu Miu hairband you'd like to swap for a Swarovski tiara, this is the place to go. In theory, you can swap your way to directional designer labels for perpetuity. It's the antithesis to one-night-only clothes, or the buy-it-discard-it cycle - you're also helping to prolong the lifespan of garments and creating an alternative market.

It looks like Saturday mornings swap shop with noel Edmunds was onto a good thing. For those of you not old enough to remember, the multi-coloured swap-shop was a 70’s BBC show where kids could do straight swaps of their toys and various other paraphernalia. Zoom forward to more recent years and there’s the growing trend for swapping parties, I’m not talking swinging couples here, I mean parties where a group of friends get together bring along a few items, designer or high street, and swap for something new. It’s a fun and guilt free way of updating your wardrobe while ticking all those recycling and low-consumption boxes. Now the web has got in on the act eBay style with www.whatsmineisyours.com – here you can swap, buy or sell and it’s already attracting a good variety of fashion addicts.

If you've got lots of clutter, but can't be bothered to host a clothes swap party, Whatsmineisyours.com offers an alternative solution
The site is an online clothes swap, which means that there are thousands of swappers waiting to trade their fashion faux pas with yours.
The great thing about clothes swaps is that no matter how awful you think your trade is, your junk really is somebody else's treasure, and you're unwanted lime green and pink shell suit becomes somebody else's most worn outfit.
Specialising in designer and vintage clothes, whatsmineisyours.com is a clothes swap with a twist, not only can you swap but the site also allows you to buy and sell items without leaving your house. There is also a selection of furniture and accessories; you could swap your old chest of draws that you've been meaning to throw out for ages, with a fabulous new wardrobe that's big enough for all your clothes and your handbags.
If you see something you like and want to exchange you can make an offer of exchange for something that you have. There's a member's wish list that you can search to see if you have what your potential swapper wants, and if you don't you can still go in with an offer.
There isn't a trading charge if you just want to buy something- but you do have to register before proposing the purchase.
Like with ebay, you are able to leave feedback for buyers and sellers so members can build up a trust among each other.
If you want to revamp your wardrobe, or trade last years winter coat for a new one, then whatsmineisyours.com allows you to get and get rid of anything you want without stepping outside.

If you haven't heard of clothes swapping parties, you've been living under a rock. They're the new way to get your hands on a new wardrobe, without taking out a bank loan.
Judy Berger has been hosting successful clothes swapping parties for years, and more recently has launched a swapping website as a new business venture. Judy gives eight hints and tips on successful swapping parties.
Essential tips for a successful swap party
1) Plan ahead. Quantity is key; so make sure you have a good-sized group of people. Group emailing your friends is great way to instigate a chain reaction.
2) Try to find a perfect mix, preferably those with similar tastes in fashion.
3) Ask your guests to bring wine and nibbles, that way nobody carries the full expense of the evening on their shoulders.
4) It's a good idea to allow your guests to buy or sell their clothes if they can't find a suitable swap. Let your guests know this before they arrive so they can bring some cash with them.
5) Have your guests write down the value of their swap items before they arrive. They should list all items they are bringing and write a small description detailing any faults or stains, so everyone goes home happy.
6) Assign a few spare bedrooms for people to change in or do make shift-fitting rooms with sheets.
7) Put a full-length mirror into your party room to encourage people to talk about the clothes they are trying on, honest opinions are much appreciated.
8) If you have any clothes left over, then why not post them on www.whatsmineisyours.com that way your attracting other swappers from around the world.
The Daily Mail are the first to pick up on the clothes swapping idea as they place whatsmineisyours.com in their 'whats hot' list.
